This height difference forces the thinset to compress unevenly under the weight of a person. When the bond fails, the tile cracks or the grout lines pop out. Wood Floor Stability and Squeaks

Hardwood planks or engineered wood rely on a rigid base to prevent movement. If the subfloor has a valley, the floorboards will flex downward with every step. Wet Area Substrates and Waterproofing

The floor beneath a shower pan or a curbless entry requires even tighter tolerances. Water travels along the lowest points of a surface. If the slope for drainage is inconsistent, water will sit against the edge of the curb. Proper installation of a waterproofing membrane depends on a stable, flat plane. If the cement board is installed over a wavy subfloor, the membrane might stretch or tear at the high points. A smooth plane allows the membrane to bond tightly to the substrate without air pockets.

The Impact on Fixtures

Heavy items like a freestanding tub or an alcove tub exert massive downward pressure. If the floor is not level, the weight of the water and the tub shifts to one side. This creates uneven stress on the plumbing connections and the drain. A vanity or a countertop also requires a flat base to prevent the cabinetry from twisting. A twisted cabinet makes it impossible to align the faucet or the sink properly. A level floor keeps the mechanical components in their correct alignment.

Checking the Work

A long straightedge or a laser level reveals the truth of the subfloor. A small sample overstates the edge, so measurements must be taken across the entire span. Correcting the floor before the tile or wood arrives saves time and money. Patching low spots with a cementitious filler is the standard method for fixing minor deviations. A flat floor is the only way to ensure the longevity of the finished surface.
